Our Town

unity-43_edited_edited.jpg

Settlement began in 1904 and with the arrival of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1908, Unity was being built.  Population growth was stifled in the 1930's, but picked up again after World War II.  Natural gas was discovered near Unity, and further drilling also revealed a substantial deposit of sodium chloride (common salt) from when much of Saskatchewan was covered by inland seas.  Further, exploratory drilling also revealed extensive deposits of potash, and the first attempt at potash mining in Saskatchewan and in Canada, was made near Unity in the early 1950s.
